LOS ANGELES —UNAC/UHCP President Denise Duncan, RN, issued the following statement on the violence in Charlottesville over the weekend:
“UNAC/UHCP condemns the white supremacists, Ku Klux Klan members and neo-Nazis who incited violence this weekend as they marched in Charlottesville. Their bigotry claimed the life of a peaceful counter protestor who was mowed down in a crowd by a racist at the wheel, and their disgusting ideology cost two state troopers their lives. Dozens were injured in the protests. As we process the horror, we also thank the nurses and hospital workers for caring for those injured at the scene.
“A Nazi march in support of a Confederate monument in the year 2017 is a frightening flashback to an ugly side in our country’s past that has been unacceptable for decades. These are people who proudly assert the right to publicly celebrate their racism, and promote violence against their opponents.
“As a country, we need to stand behind groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League who have fought these ideas and this violence for far too long. As we get word, we will share information about peaceful gatherings in Southern California where UNAC/UHCP members can join others who reject these dangerous ideologies.”
