Kaiser Permanente San Diego opened a new medical center in San Marcos on August 9, 2023—while its existing two hospitals, San Diego Medical Center and Zion Medical Center, have remained chronically understaffed for years. Persistent efforts by registered nurses to work in partnership for short and long term staffing solutions have met with stonewalling, empty promises, and dismissal from Kaiser leadership. Kaiser RNs alerted the public to the staffing problems on the eve of the new San Marcos hospital’s opening and predicted that the problems would continue and even worsen at all three medical centers. The nurses’ predictions have been borne out by their experiences in the facilities.
