UNAC/UHCP’s Jimmy Gomez Headed to Congress
LOS ANGELES—After a hard-fought election, former UNAC/UHCP Legislative and Political Director Jimmy Gomez is headed to Washington, DC, to represent the constituents of California’s 34th Congressional District.
Gomez cut his teeth in Southern California politics at the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP), where he served as Legislative and Political Director for three years before being elected to the California State Assembly in 2012. His roots at the health care union is obvious in some of his key legislative priorities while serving, including an update to California’s Paid Family Leave Program that allows more workers to take leave after the birth of a child (AB 908), a transparency bill that enables pharmacies to spend more time assisting their patients and providing them with the drugs they need and less time on paperwork (AB 627), and a law designed to help small businesses meet regulations in the Americans with Disabilities Act, enabling greater access to services for disabled Californians (AB 1230).
“We’ve known Congressman Gomez since he came to UNAC/UHCP in 2009 and are thrilled he’s been elected from a field of 23 candidates to represent California in Congress. He’s always been a fighter for our number one issue—making sure that nurses and other health care professionals are able to focus on providing the best care possible to their patients. We’ve worked with Congressman Gomez on expanding access to affordable health care and we look forward to continuing to do so now that he is heading to Washington, DC,” said UNAC/UHCP President Denise Duncan, RN.
