TENS OF THOUSANDS OF UNAC/UHCP CAREGIVERS EMBARK ON FINAL DAY OF HISTORIC 5-DAY STRIKE AT KAISER PERMANENTE

Nurses and other health care professionals from 500+ hospitals and clinics across California and Hawaii vow to keep fighting for patient safety and fair contracts

Increased pressure from strike lines helps secure upcoming contract bargaining dates with Kaiser later this month

LOS ANGELES — 31,000 United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP) registered nurses and health care professionals across California and Hawaii are entering the final day of their historic five-day strike at Kaiser Permanente to protect patient care and demand real solutions to unsafe staffing and wage inequities. The strike began Tuesday, October 14, at 7 a.m. and will end Sunday, October 19, at 7 a.m.

“What we’ve shown this week is the collective strength of health care professionals who refuse to stay silent while patient care suffers,” said Charmaine S. Morales, RN, President of UNAC/UHCP. “We’ve been loud, visible, and united — and it’s working. Our pressure on these lines has compelled Kaiser Permanente to come back to the table. Now we expect management to do what’s right: commit to enforceable staffing standards and fair pay for the professionals who keep our communities healthy.”

This unprecedented strike has sent a powerful message from frontline nurses and health care professionals across Hawaii and California: patient safety cannot wait. Backed by the Joint Commission’s new ruling on staffing, UNAC/UHCP members are demanding enforceable staffing standards to ensure every unit has enough nurses and health care professionals to provide timely, quality care without burnout or unsafe workloads.

“This strike has shown the incredible unity and determination of our members across California and Hawai‘i,” said Joe Guzynski, Executive Director of UNAC/UHCP. “For five days, tens of thousands of health care professionals stood together for their patients, their colleagues, and the future of care at Kaiser Permanente. Their strength and solidarity have made a real impact — and as we return to the bargaining table next week, we do so expecting Kaiser to address the staffing crisis in a serious way — a way that ensures quality patient care.”

Continued pressure from striking nurses and other health care professionals across California, Hawaii, and Oregon has compelled management to come back to the bargaining table, with the announcement of bargaining dates between Kaiser Permanente and the Alliance of Health Care Unions later this month. UNAC/UHCP membership remains steadfast in its push toward a fair agreement.

When negotiations resume, caregivers will be back at the table ready to protect patient safety, demand fair compensation, and insist on staffing levels that prevent dangerous delays in care.
